The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) is investigating a controversial ₱1.4 billion land acquisition deal linked to former Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) chief, Arnell Ignacio. The deal reportedly lacked approval from OWWA’s Board of Trustees, raising concerns about irregularities and unauthorized transactions.
Ongoing Probe Confirmed by DMW Officials
At the Saturday News Forum in Quezon City, DMW Undersecretary Patricia Yvonne “PJ” Caunan confirmed the investigation. She stressed the importance of due process, saying, “An active investigation is underway. We will make sure due process is followed every step of the way.”
Ignacio Removed Amid Loss of Trust
The controversy emerged after Ignacio’s removal from his role as OWWA administrator. Migrant Workers Secretary Hans Cacdac announced the dismissal, citing loss of trust and confidence as the reason. He said the ₱1.4-billion land deal was made without the necessary authorization from the Board of Trustees, which oversees major transactions.
New Administrator Commits to Transparency
As the new OWWA administrator, Caunan shared the agency’s plans to resolve the issue. “We will conduct a full audit of the deal and related transactions. We will also seek legal advice from the Department of Justice and coordinate with the Commission on Audit to ensure transparency and accountability,” she stated.
The Role of OWWA and Its Importance
The Overseas Workers Welfare Administration provides social security and welfare programs to millions of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs). Due to this critical role, any mismanagement could have wide-reaching consequences.
DMW’s Effort to Strengthen Governance
This investigation shows the DMW’s commitment to improving governance and integrity after recent allegations. Stakeholders, including migrant worker groups and government watchdogs, are closely watching the probe’s results.
The DMW assures the public it will take appropriate action based on the investigation to protect OFWs and ensure responsible use of public funds.
